Medieval Story Book Web Quest!
Year Seven History Term 2
You are Sir John, a practicing medieval knight in the Middle Ages. In the following weeks, you are going to get ready to go to battle. An invading army threatens the safety of the inhabitants of the castle you live in.
Gawain Castle
Before you go off to battle, you must learn about medieval life and how all the different types of people in this age lived.
Your Quest is set before you! Go Sir John and Save the people of Gawain Castle!
TASK
Your task is to create a medieval story book in groups of three to four Students.
As this is a daunting task, you will not be able to complete it on your own. You must enlist the help of your elders, you parents, to complete this task.
You will be broken up into groups of three families. Each family has a certain task to complete, and once all tasks are completed then the castle will be saved and all the towns people in it.
The Story book should include research on:
· The different social classes that lived in medieval times e.g. peasants, knights, Lords, Kings etc.
· How these groups lived
· What roles these people played in society
You are to use a Wiki like this one to present your
findings.
Go to:
This wiki, as we have been learning, is a Web 2.0
invention and allows many people to be able to access
and edit your informtaion.
You will sign up and nominate certain families to do
certain tasks! And in time you will have a wonderful story
book that is online for all to see!
Your story book should include a brief introduction of the medieval time period that we have been studying.
Each new social class should have its own page of information and should include at least one picture.
A Story book is just like a picture book. It should include a:
· Title page
· Information page for each personality/person
· Reference page – where you got your information from e.g. websites, books (title, author, date, published etc.)
You can have as many pages as you want, but make sure you put in the relevant information. Pictures are a great way of communicating your point of information – BUT THEY ARE NOT THE ONLY WAY! Refer to the ASSESSMENT part of this web quest to see how marks will be awarded.
An example of your story book information page may look like this:
PEASANTS
This is a typical image of what we think medieval peasants looked like…
Peasants lived in…
The role they played in society was to…
Of course your page does not have to be set out like this! Be creative! Use your existing ICT skills to create a unique and individual Story book!
PROCESS
Step One
As this is a new task, lesson one will be used to go through the Assessment and make sure that each student is clear of the group roles, what the assessment is asking and getting into our groups and allocate roles.
If this is done quickly – we can start on our Story Books!
Step Two
As we now know our groups and the task ahead of us, the next step is to inform the parents of this task. I will send a letter home after I have the definite groups as to let them know first hand from the teacher.
Students should be clear on what they are researching as this work will be done at home with your parents. In class I will allocate certain time for you to confer with your peers about what you have found and share ideas on how you want to present it.
THE PLANNING PHASE
Discuss WHO is going to do WHAT! This will help you to get each personality/role done quickly!
E.g.
FAMILY ONE and FAMILY TWO – Research the different class groups in the Medieval Period
FAMILY THREE – Sort through the information, summarise and find relevant pictures
FAMILY FOUR – Edit the information and work on a presentation that will be interesting and informative
This is not the only way the group can work, but it can be a guideline if you get stuck. REMEMBER THE TEACHER IS ALWAYS THERE TO HELP!!
THE RESEARCH PHASE
How do I get the information? Through the resources listed below in the RESOURCE section of the WebQuest, you can click on the links and gather the relevant information that you need for your story book.
THE INFORMATION PROCESSING STAGE
What information do I need? By gathering and deciphering relevant information – you have reached the information processing stage! Students should be able to evaluate important information from a variety of websites and books and incorporate it into their story books.
THE DECISION MAKING STAGE
Decide what information should be used in the Story book.
THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE
Where is your information going to go? Organise a relevant structure for your Story book!
THE PRESENTATION PHASE
How is your presentation going to look? Decide on the layout of your story book and incorporate your pictures and information in a creative style.
